Job Summary:
SMSI, LLC is seeking a Principal HVAC Mechanical Engineer - HVAC Design to provide support to assignments at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Oak Ridge National Lab, and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (Aiken, SC). Completes assigned tasks under routine supervision and technical direction. The need is immediate. Position is direct hire and is a full-time position.
The successful candidate will design HVAC and HVAC supporting systems for a variety of facility projects including the SRPPF facility (Aiken, SC). Tasks include developing design calculations, process flow diagrams, sequences of operation, equipment selection and layout, ductwork and piping sizing and layout, support of project proposals, interdisciplinary coordination and participating of QA/QC process. Ability to walkdown systems in the field will be devoted to site inspection, construction, and support for operations and system turnover. This position is primarily a leadership role and will be part of a design team environment.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Must be willing to work in a design team environment, including directing the work of junior engineers and designers, and delegating work as required as well as take design direction from senior-level engineers.
  • Interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Develop calculations, flow diagrams, and specifications.
  • Size and layout ductwork, hydronic and plumbing piping systems.
  • Familiar with ANSI NQA & QA/QC processes.
  • Proficient with codes, standards, and guidelines and especially ASHRAE standards.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • A minimum of 5 to ten (10) years related experience in HVAC or mechanical systems.
  • Experience with HVAC systems in nuclear facility environment or nuclear equipment in unique environments or industry.
  • Position may require the ability to manage other engineers and designers.
  • Experience interfacing with client contacts.
  • Experience with thermal load calculation and energy modeling for mechanical systems.
  • Experience in calculating and sizing of mechanical equipment including AHUs, fans, dampers, and pumps.
  • Strong experience in sizing and laying out ductwork and hydronic piping systems.
  • Must have knowledge of ASHRAE and AG-1 HVAC standards.
  • Must have experience with nuclear &industrial HVAC systems.
  • Ability to meet vaccination mandate requirements for Department of Energy (DOE) client site access for this position is strongly preferred.
  • US Citizenship.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening test.
Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree (B. S.) in Mechanical Engineering or other engineering disciplines from accredited program.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.
  • Be able to work in an environment with open discussions and visitors without getting distracted.
  • May be required to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Physical ability to walkdown systems in the field.
