Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

N3B brings operational discipline, proven approaches and predictable results to the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner; will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Provides a broad range of network services concerned with the organization's information systems network.
  • Develops and maintains systems, applications, security and network configurations.
  • Installs network software upgrades, including planning, scheduling, testing, and coordination.
  • Evaluates vendor products in hardware, software, and telecommunications equipment and recommends security procedures.
  • Provides technical support and guidance to users.
  • Trains users on network operations and procedures.
  • Monitors, maintains and tunes Local Area Network (LAN) systems, equipment and services, and promptly diagnoses and assists in resolving problems.
  • Assists with the management of security systems that include but are not limited to firewalls, switches, intrusion detection systems/intrusion prevention systems, web content filtering systems, mail gateways, multifactor authentication systems, and Syslog servers.
  • Provides support in the areas of vulnerability assessment, incident handling, system hardening, and system implementation of network resources.
  • Manages the VoIP PBX to support telecommunication needs.
  • Performs updates to software and hardware systems, as needed, with careful regard to protection of data and minimal user disruption.
  • Effectively integrates deployment of end-user applications with network mechanisms and tools.
  • Supports, develops and implements intersystem communication processes to ensure data access, consolidation and integration between systems.
  • Creates software utilities for system management functions.
  • Assists in the development of operating procedures that maximize network and system availability, responsiveness, and reliability in accordance with Company policy.
  • Monitors inbound network access and outbound internet access, using approved tools. Provides internet access reports to management.
  • Troubleshoots network performance issues, and creates and maintains a disaster recovery plan.
  • Arranges maintenance and support contracts for systems and software.
  • Will lead and develop projects.
  • Trains, mentors, and provides direction to more junior staff.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Unquestioned integrity and qualification for a government security clearance
  • Experience with perimeter security devices such as routers, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and web content filtering systems.
  • Experience with fiber optics, twisted-pair, patch-panel cabling standards, and multi-toning/tracing, cable testing.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of standard networking protocols to specifically include IPv6.
  • Familiarity with current Microsoft Server OS
  • Fluency with Ethernet, 802.1x Network Access Control, Port-Security, VLANs, Radius, BGP and serial connections.
  • Effective interpersonal skills (e.g., ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively, work/interact effectively and amicably with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures and with diverse personal attributes).
  • Effective communication skills (i.e., ability to present ideas effectively in formal and informal situations and convey thoughts clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing).
  • Strong planning, organizational, and time management skills (i.e., ability to effectively plan, organize, and prioritize work, and to control and follow up to assure work completion).
  • Initiative (i.e. initiate appropriate action without being directed) and ability to work independently.
  • All qualified applicants will be considered; however, the successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the United States Department of Energy.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelors' degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related discipline combined with at a diverse IT experience and least 10 years of networking technologies experience; however, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable. The job level will be determined based upon relevant education, knowledge, skills, and abilities demonstrated at the time of the interview.

Education Equivalency: 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.

  • Preferred Firewall and cyber security related certifications
  • Preferred VoIP, audio, and video bridge experience.
  • Required CCNA certification; Preferred CCNP certification

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Ability to obtain an L level Department of Energy security clearance.
